Modcloth Nail Klub and Dresses Challenge - Galaxy Nail Art

I am so excited for today's post! I was recently contacted by Modcloth and invited to participate in their Nail Klub and Dresses challenge. The challenge is pretty simple: pick one of their summer dresses and interpret it through nail art. As you all know I love incorporating fashion into nail art so I jumped at the chance to participate. The Modcloth Nail Klub has some great examples and inspiration on turning pretty dresses into nail art here. For my own post I chose this gorgeous Heart and Solar System Dress as my inspiration. It's so different and fun for a summer dress, and I love how unique the galaxy pattern is.  var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-41312601-1']); _gaq.push(['_setDomainName', 'valiantlyvarnished.com']); _gaq.push(['_setAllowLinker', true]); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']);

(function() { var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true; ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? 'https://ssl' : 'http://www') + '.google-analytics.com/ga.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s); })();

For this design I used:
Base Color:
Bondi Midnight Mystery

Colors used for Galaxy Pattern:
Sinful Colors Snow Me White
Sinful Colors Black on Black
Lacquer Lust Topaz
American Apparel Pinto
China Glaze Manhunter
Wet N' Wild Kaleidoscope
Top Coat:
Butter London Matte Top Coat
I started by painting two coats of my base color. Once dry I used a makeup sponge to apply blotches of the various colors. I used a dotting tool to recreate some of the larger dots and splotches in the pattern.  I then took a clean makeup sponge and lightly applied Kaleidoscope over each nail in random patterns for a light sparkle effect. I applied my matte top coat to echo the matte texture of the fabric in the dress.
I am so in love with how this turned out. I love galaxy nails because they look incredibly complicated but really aren't!  Another great thing about them is that there is really no right or wrong way for them to turn out. Whatever your imagination comes up with is great.
